FreeLoaderz is a coalition of Cardano stake pool operators (SPOs), developers, and community members offering their talents and services to the Cardano community in an effort to improve the everyday user experience, promote decentralization, and maintain the security of the network. Originated during the Sundae Swap launch, which resulted in a period of high network congestion, FreeLoaderz began offering URL API access to their relay servers to help improve transaction speed by opening up relay node ports to user wallets. FreeLoaderz has since evolved into a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO), which aims to provide high quality services to the Cardano community that enhance the everyday user experience. In the spirit of providing valuable services to the Cardano community, FreeLoaderz now offers a variety of powerful utilities to the Cardano Community, with more to come over the upcoming year. In this document, we want to share our contributions to the Cardano community by highlighting notable projects that we are deploying into the ecosystem:
- Freeloaderz Load Balancers
- FreeLoaderz SmartClaimz
Further we wish to introduce the FreeLoaderz DAO and governance token $FLZ, as well as share the roadmap of our long term goals for continued development and contributions to the community.
FREELOADERZ LOAD BALANCERS
The Sundae Swap launch earlier this year resulted in a period of high network congestion: Transactions could take days to submit to the blockchain. A transaction submitted via Nami wallet, for example, would be submitted to Blockfrost’s limited number of shared transaction servers (Figure 1). During this period of congestion, thousands of transactions were waiting in line to go through Blockfrost’s server’s mempool, which made the everyday user experience frustratingly slow, requiring hours to days for a single transaction to be added to the blockchain.
Every node on the blockchain has a mempool that follows a first-in first-out (FIFO) transaction queue, and every stake pool should have at least one relay node, with many pools have 2–5 for redundancy, meaning there are probably over 10,000 relays worldwide, each with the same ability as Blockfrost’s servers to help with transaction submission processing. A program called cardano-submit-api was recently released by IOG. This program, which every SPO can enable or install, allows users to input the IP address of a relay node running cardano-submit-api into their wallet and submit transactions using relay node mempools (Figure 1). This allows the user to skip the long mempool queues at Blockfrost and use other relay nodes instead for faster transaction times, furthering Cardano’s decentralization if widely adopted.
Figure 1. Overview of the advantages provided by FreeLoaderz relay nodes to the transaction submission process on Cardano.
While SPOs could solely provide the cardano-submit-api to their users, this may also cause a bottleneck if that single relay node can’t keep up with the number of transactions being submitted to its mempool, or if the relay needs to go down for maintenance. Because of this, Freeloaderz developed a load balancer proxy that evenly distributes transactions across a pool of more than 60 participating SPO relay nodes, each running cardano-submit-api, which combined is already be processing hundreds to thousands of submit transactions per day (Figure 2). Extrapolate this to 2,500 relays and imagine how many transactions per day can be processed in a decentralized way across the entire Cardano blockchain!
Figure 2. Overview of FreeLoaderz load balancer proxy design for transaction submission.
FreeLoaderz currently has two load balancers that are being used for distributing transactions across the FreeLoaderz participating relay nodes, with one in the US and one in Europe (see below):
To maintain full transparency of the performance of load balancers, we have live dashboards that can be used for monitoring the status of the relay nodes that are connected to the load balancers:
We also have a live statistics chart that can be used for monitoring the number of transactions being processed daily. FreeLoaderz also documents on this chart incidents of potential spam and other types of attacks:

FreeLoaderz is also excited to announce that we have been awarded $5000 from Catalyst during Fund 8, which will be used to expand the number of load balancers to include one that can be connected to by members of the Cardano community in Asia and the South Pacific. These funds will also support the existing infrastructure and allow for individuals to be supported that can maintain the load balancers function and security.
For projects wanting to airdrop a large number of transactions across many wallets, FreeLoaderz developed a two-step python transaction script for mass air drops, called FreeDropz. One such use case for FreeDropz is to distribute a single native token type to a list of Cardano addresses, without making the recipient addresses pay. This could be used for example by a stake pool to distribute native tokens to its delegators, paying for the transaction fees and also an amount of ~1.45 ADA that must accompany any native token. Using a wallet to create each individual transaction, the cost of transaction fees and amount of time spent will be quite large. By combining the transactions into batches (of ~120 transactions), the estimated transaction fees saved is about 96% (during the preliminary tests). However, it should be noted that the amount of ADA that has to be sent with the tokens cannot be avoided (termed the minUTXO cost).
FreeDropz works by essentially using a script that first consolidates multiple UTXOs into a single address to be used for the air drop, and then sends out the minimum required UTXOs in batches of ~120 combined transactions to all of the desired addresses; this process of batching transactions reduces transaction fees by approximately 96% (during preliminary tests).
If the number of transactions you have to do is quite large, because of how the UTxO model works, the script will need a large amount of UTxO to use as inputs for the airdrop transactions. For this reason, the script will actually do the airdrop in two steps:
The script will first analyze the list of addresses and calculate how many transactions are required for the airdrop and how many tokens and lovelace will be required for each transaction. Then it will create a transaction to create the required UTxOs at the first address. After the input UTxOs are created, the airdrop transactions will be created, using these inputs.
For deployment of these batched transactions, FreeDropz uses the FreeLoaderz load balancer proxy to distribute transactions across the blockchain to help increase transaction throughput and decentralize the node-to-client transaction submission process.
What are the costs?
For 100 addresses…
Transaction fees = ~0.7 ADA (without FreeDropz = ~17 ADA)
100 * 1.45 ADA = 145 ADA to send together with the tokens
Total Cost: ~145.7 ADA
For 1,000 addresses…
Transaction fees ~6.5 ADA (without FreeDropz = ~162 ADA)
1000 * 1.45 ADA = 1,450 ADA to send together with the tokens
Total Cost: ~1,456.5 ADA
For 10,000 addresses…
Transaction fees ~65 ADA (without FreeDropz = ~1625 ADA)
10,000 * 1.45 ADA = 14,500 ADA to send together with the tokens
Total Cost: ~14,565 ADA
The largest cost for airdrops is the minUTXO cost, which is unavoidable because it is required by the Ouroboros protocol to be sent with native assets. Transaction fees are a lesser part of the cost, however FreeDropz can significantly reduce costs when airdropping to a large number of addresses (>1,000–10,000)! This project is open source and can be viewed here.
Other Platforms have approached this issue of minUTXO costs by having users claim their tokens using a rewards distribution system and pay to cover the minUTXO costs themselves. For example, users would first have to send approximately 3–4 ADA and would be sent back ~1.5–1.8 ADA along with the tokens, after subtracting transaction fees and processing/service fees. However, this is prohibitively expensive to a user making claims every epoch, and rewards do not accumulate. Therefore, FreeLoaderz has developed an improved solution to this based on blockchain programs, which we have named FreeLoaderz SmartClaimz.
We have seen a boom (over 4 million at the time of writing) of the amount of native assets since the Mary hard fork. This has produced a lot of value and innovation for Cardano as well as demand from the Cardano community. However, an issue that crypto/blockchain faces as an industry is its lack of user experience.
When native assets first arrived the two main wallets were Daedalus and Yoroi showing the network wasn’t mature enough to handle dApp connector functionality. This is where the two transaction “send x ADA get x native asset” back method was conceived for distribution of tokens and NFTs.
In the Cardano ecosystem now, we have over half a dozen different wallets, many with the web3 dApp connector functionality that allows users to interact with the dApp and their wallet simultaneously. However, currently there still isn’t a web3 solution for users to enjoy extra rewards while staking their ADA.
A web3 solution not only allows for a better user experience but also enables the claiming process to be bundled into one transaction rather than two, thus lowering the fees and overall time for users to receive their tokens. For this reason, FreeLoaderz is excited to announce a new web3 utility built for the Cardano community: FreeLoaderz SmartClaimz.
FreeLoaderz SmartClaimz is a novel reward distribution platform that aims to be the premier web3 dapp for end users to be able to claim tokens, and for decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs), token projects, NFT projects, video game projects, and more to deploy quality tokens to users. Token distribution platforms are a key piece of infrastructure for our ever growing ecosystem and SmartClaimz will be the go-to spot that prioritizes a smooth and fair user experience. This platform is built on state-of-the-art technology using blockchain programs, with the ability to allow the user’s rewards to accumulate so the user doesn’t have to pay unnecessary fees to withdraw every epoch.
The following are the list of novel features and capabilities of the SmartClaimz platform:
- Web3 token claims via blockchain programs with dapp-enabled wallets
- Complete token distribution customization for token projects
- Token airdrops to white-listed addresses
- Transaction submission highly distributed through FreeLoaderz load balancer platform, which is connected to more than 60 SPO relay nodes for distributed transaction submission
- Unclaimed token accumulation (claims can be made whenever the user desires)
- Low fees!
In particular, of special note, SmartClaimz…
- makes advanced use of parallel transactions for efficiency and cost reduction
- automatically calculates rewards (by delegation to appropriate stakepool)
- supports several distribution rules (fixed number of tokens per delegator, total tokens divided evenly between all delegators, relative to staked value (ADA), customizable, etc.)
- enables one transaction instead of two per claim
- number of tokens only limited by blocksize
- price for each claim is not affected by number of tokens claimed
- has several rule mechanisms for automatic whitelisting (e.g. “Stake to Pool X, has Token Y, etc.)
The SmartClaimz platform was built by a small team of dedicated stake pool operators and developers. This system is designed to run on the back of the already-existing FreeLoaderz load balancers, which use FreeLoaderz SPO relay nodes to submit transactions to the network in a highly efficient manner (see Figure 1). The backend is built upon a powerful backend solution named Drasil, the flagship product of a new startup with the same name, and was developed by the same developer who built the NFT marketplace “Artifct”.
Drasil has one key mission: to help good ideas become real solutions on Cardano. The software enables and empowers anybody to quickly and easily create powerful applications that leverage blockchain technology, without getting tangled in the weeds of its complexity.
The reality of building on Cardano blockchains at this early stage is that it’s mostly difficult and frustrating, slow and complicated, confusing and expensive. It is a unique and sophisticated chain with its own advanced peculiarities, so even for experienced developers there is a high barrier to entry and a steep learning curve.
Drasil is an advanced technology stack that abstracts away almost all of the complexity of implementing the most useful features, providing a simple and intuitive suite of fast, secure and powerful “off-the-shelf” services which are easy to integrate into any project. Examples of these services include UTxO management, concurrency solvers, smart contract generators, DAO creation and management, and much more — a veritable “Swiss-army-knife” of tools created to work seamlessly together. Best of all, one can access all of these services using one of the most familiar methods available to developers: REST API. These requests connect to exposed endpoints, which are themselves customized to the client and utility. This makes creating new dApps with Drasil much easier and more intuitive than previously possible for the vast majority of common features.
Hopefully this wets your appetite, but this is just the beginning — you’ll definitely be hearing a lot more about the exciting stuff coming from Drasil soon as they are working quietly but intently to produce game-changing Cardano development solutions. FreeLoaderz is one of the first projects they have chosen to collaborate with and their powerful, high-speed backend is what runs SmartClaimz behind-the-scenes.
SmartClaimz plans to be an efficient, state-of-the-art token claiming platform with extremely low fees. For each claim, FreeLoaderz will only a single small transaction fee in ADA. The user does not need to first send ADA to SmartClaimz in order to receive back tokens minus fees in a separate transaction. What you see is what you pay. That’s it! This is because SmartClaimz utilizes the coin selection algorithm and a sophisticated UTXO management system based on blockchain programs for transactions, unlike current platforms that batch transactions by requiring the user to first send ADA to a payment address, which then batches the return transactions to multiple users. Even better, there is no need to claim tokens every epoch, as SmartClaimz allows rewards to accumulate over multiple epochs.
Figure 3. SmartClaimz Reward Distribution System Overview. dapp3-enabled wallets can connect to SmartClaimz, where the user claims their tokens. Once the user selects their tokens, the submitted transaction is sent to the FreeLoaderz load balancers, which are then distributed transactions across the more than 60 FreeLoaderz SPO relay nodes.
Why does FreeLoaderz charge any fees at all? Before we begin, it is important to note that FreeLoaderz is a DAO LLC and therefore no individuals part of this organization will directly profit from any fees. We chose to charge a small fee in ADA for each claim for the following reasons. First, fees are necessary in order to support the infrastructure that powers SmartClaimz, as well as to purchase additional load balancers to expand our global distribution and build in redundancy. Second, FreeLoaderz aims to support SPOs that participate in FreeLoaderz by using fees that accumulate in the treasury to delegate to FreeLoaderz stake pools in order to support decentralization.
Things are moving quickly for the SmartClaimz project, due to the incredible contributions of FreeLoaderz developers and contributors who have been tirelessly working on building this project. SmartClaimz public testnet is live as of April 2022, and is anticipated to be released on mainnet in 3Q22. For the public testnet, we have created a simple guide for the everyday user to create a testnet wallet to receive test ADA (tADA), which can be used to delegate on testnet to APEX, PANL, SANTO and LIDO testnet stake pools. Once delegated, testnet users can connect to SmartClaimz and claim testnet tokens. Read this guide to learn how to participate in our public testnet!
SmartClaimz aims to be a premiere reward distributions system that represents the true capabilities of Cardano blockchain programs using the eUTXO model. In the spirit of decentralization all code will ultimately be open source. This will occur in stages, with the front-end being initially released completely open source. This is in line with our mission to share our contributions to the Cardano Community, to provide high quality services that enhance the everyday user experience and bring value to the Cardano community.

FREELOADERZ DAO, GOVERNANCE TOKEN FLZ, AND TOKENOMICS
Freeloaderz is a grassroots Cardano project that is being built for the community by the community. It began when several stake pool operators started working together to alleviate network congestion. In a very short time, the project has grown exponentially. Freeloaderz is now supported by the work of developers, stake pool operators and a discord community of over 900 offering their talents and services to the Cardano community in an effort to improve the everyday user experience, promote decentralization, and maintain the security of the network. These contributions have led to the development of a variety of powerful utilities to the Cardano Community. Like any organization of this size, it requires some structure. As part of the growth and evolution of FreeLoaderz, in the spirit of decentralization and promoting community engagement, FreeLoaderz has since evolved into a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO), established as an un-incorporated limited liability company (DAO LLC) registered with the state of Wyoming, in order to allow Freeloaderz organization and community governance.
The members of the FreeLoaderz DAO have come together to form this organization that will serve our community by providing high quality services to the Cardano community that enhance the everyday user experience, while enabling the Cardano Community to join in and participate in the stewardship of the FreeLoaderz DAO. The DAO structure was chosen because it is most compatible with the mission and vision of the core Freeloaderz members. A DAO, Decentralized Autonomous Organization, provides organizational structure that is not hierarchical. This is perfect for Freeloaderz in that it provides a Cardano based framework for long term management and governance of the project. In this way, anyone can submit a proposal for a project and the community can vote it up or down. All of this is above board and visible on the blockchain. Freeloaderz is now, and intends to forever remain, a resource for the Cardano community.
Below are a few resources that are used for governance of the FreeLoaderz DAO:

This brings us to the Freeloaderz governance token, $FLZ. The token has one purpose, which is a mechanism for governance of the Freeloaderz DAO. As with any token, holders have the freedom to swap $FLZ for other tokens and to assign value. This, however, is not the purpose of the $FLZ token from the Freeloaderz organizational perspective. The only functional purpose of the $FLZ token from our perspective is that of a governance token. There is no intent to create long term inherent value outside of the Freeloaderz organization, and this token iis not intended to provide any sort of equity or share in FreeLoaderz. The token is understood to be an empowerment tool for the user, nothing more.
$FLZ has been deployed to be used for voting on measures related to the FreeLoaderz organization. $FLZ will initially be deployed to the Cardano Community to be claimed via SmartClaimz as part of our Promotional Stake Pool Offering and Discord Community Member Distribution (see tokenomics below). These governance tokens will have a high degree of utility, As part of governance of the FreeLoaderz DAO, $FLZ has been created in order to give members of the FreeLoaderz DAO a means of voting on various measures related to FreeLoaderz. This includes (but is not limited to) decisions on the direction of the FreeLoaderz DAO, FreeLoaderz $FLZ treasury dispensation, and SmartClaimz. Some examples relating to directions of the FreeLoaderz DAO are voting on measures related to improving the products and services provided by the FreeLoaderz DAO and member improvement proposals to accomplish tasks that either any FreeLoaderz Community Member proposes or those put out by FreeLoaderz Core Contributors. These votes will ultimately be conducted on-chain by $FLZ token holders.
The $FLZ governance token is intended to be used as a governance tool that allows Cardano community members interested in participating in the FreeLoaderz DAO to have a voice in deciding how FreeLoaderz will continue to strive to provide valuable services that enrich the Cardano community. As such, FreeLoaderz will follow a 1 token = 1 vote mechanism for voting, so votes will ultimately be weighted based on the number of $FLZ governance tokens that one possesses.
There are a number of ways that a FreeLoaderz Community Member can receive $FLZ governance tokens for voting, based on the $FLZ tokenomics schedule that was outlined at the inception of FreeLoaderz. 500,000,000 $FLZ tokens have been minted (see policyID here) with the tokenomics schedule outlined below.
FreeLoaderz (FLZ) Tokenomics and Vesting
FreeLoaderz token FLZ tokenomics and vesting schedule.
Initial Core Contributors (3.0%): 1% (10,000 FLZ tokens) will be given to Initial Core Contributors up front at the time of the Active Community Member AirDrop, followed by 1 year commitment. After 1 year, Initial Core Contributors will receive 25% every 6 months (250,000 FLZ tokens every 6 months).
Promotional Stake Pool Offering (PSPO) (1.5%): $FLZ tokens will be distributed to delegators of Single Pool Alliance (SPA) and FreeLoaderz stake pools to promote interest in FreeLoaderz to the wider Cardano community. The PSPO will last for at least 12–24 epochs. The SmartClaimz platform (smartclaimz.io), developed by FreeLoaderz, will be used for initial deployment of the $FLZ tokens, with a set amount of tokens to each delegator every epoch. Rewards will accumulate so delegators can claim tokens whenever they desire.
FreeLoaderz Discord Community Member Distribution (0.5%): As part of the tokenomics schedule, 0.5% of the total supply, or 2,500,000 $FLZ governance tokens, has been allocated for distribution to FreeLoaderz Discord Community Members who were in the FreeLoaderz Discord in two separate distribution rounds to those who have shown interested in participating in FreeLoaderz by joining the discord server. FreeLoaderz has taken a snapshot of white-listed addresses based on individuals who joined the FreeLoaderz discord server as shown below:
First Round (COMPLETED) — Joined FreeLoaderz discord server by 4–24–2022 at 14:25 UTC (7:25 AM PST/10:25 AM EST). Tokens distributed on May 20th to whitelisted addresses.
Second Round — Joined FreeLoaderz discover server by 5–11–2–2022 at approximately 13:00 UTC (6 AM CST/9 AM EST).
FreeLoaderz Community Members with these white-listed addresses from the second round of $FLZ governance token distributions will be able to claim the $FLZ tokens at the SmartClaimz platform (smartclaimz.io) when it goes live!
FreeLoaderz Treasury (76.6%): The treasury of FreeLoaderz holds the majority of the $FLZ GovTokens and is controlled by all GovToken holders. This ensures that funds cannot be spent without reaching consensus. To be able to spend from the treasury a formal proposal has to be created and voted on by token holders, following the outlined Proposal Process. If the proposal passes the vote funds will be released to the wallet address mentioned in the proposal.
FreeLoaderz Proposal Program (18.4%): $FLZ governance tokens will be distributed to individuals who work on proposals that are beneficial to the FreeLoaderz DAO, whether through submission of their own proposal or those posted by FreeLoaderz. These proposals will be voted on by the FreeLoaderz token holders before dispensation of $FLZ tokens and any work completed.
This distribution of tokens was decided upon by the Core Contributors to allow for an equitable distribution of $FLZ governance tokens to members of the Cardano Community who expressed interest in participating in FreeLoaderz, while providing fair voting power to all members of the FreeLoaderz DAO.
FreeLoaderz load balancer proxies, FreeDropz, and SmartClaimz are a large step in improving the user experience for the Cardano Community and just part of many additional products and services that FreeLoaderz plans to release over the next year or more. Below is a broad overview of plans for the rest of 2022 and beyond, with respect to deploying SmartClaimz, providing additional services, building partnerships, as well as improving DAO governance through on-chain voting!
Voting/Proposals On-chain — We are keeping up to speed with the latest developments in DAO governance and organizational strategies on the Cardano blockchain. Currently, we are working on a solution that will allow FreeLoaderz Community Members to vote on-chain for proposed measures related to DAO operations, products, and services that will be developed and provided by FreeLoaderz.
Community/PSPO token distributions — FreeLoaderz has already deployed the first round of $FLZ governance tokens to the discord community, with the second distribution being released when SmartClaimz goes live. We will also soon be announcing a Promotional Stake Pool Offering that will be used as another means of distributing $FLZ governance tokens to delegators of FreeLoaderz stake pools, as a means of helping to promote the stake pool operators who have given up their relays to FreeLoaderz and create another means of giving $FLZ governance tokens out to the community to help onboard more governance token holders to the DAO.
Q3 2022 and beyond
SmartClaimz Mainnet — SmartClaimz mainnet hopes to launch in early Q3 2022, allowing for token projects to deploy their projects on our platform in a web3 manner.
FLZ Token Voting On-chain — Later this year, FreeLoaderz hopes to start striving towards deploying governing programs that will be used for all things DAO — voting on proposals, $FLZ governance token distributions, etc.
Strategic Partnerships — FreeLoaderz plans to build strategic partnerships that will continue to bring value to the Cardano Community, increase the number of FreeLoaderz relay nodes and load balancer proxies that will aid in decentralizing transaction submission.
Blockchain Query Services — We also plan to participate in providing services to reduce costs in areas relating to dApp development and maintenance. Providing running servers that can be used to query the blockchain can be expensive, so if FreeLoaderz can provide these services for free or a fraction of the cost for projects, that would help the community grow and increase Cardano’s utility.
Hydra Merchant Payment Processing — We also plan to try to keep up with the latest Cardano developments, such as Hydra isomorphic state channels, and try to help aiding in the continual improvements coming to the Cardano blockchain.
CALLING OUT TO ALL SPOs
There are clear advantages for SPOs to participate with FreeLoaderz by offering their relay nodes to our load balancer. First, by joining FreeLoaderz, the combined resources of participating SPOs will help spread out transaction submissions across the network, thus helping users and delegators get the quickest transactions possible through our combined resources.
In addition, there are projects interested in utilizing the FreeLoaderz load balancer proxy service to deploy their projects. One such example is the NFT marketplace Artifct, which has been using FreeLoaderz load balancers for submitting transactions on their platform. Any projects wanting to do airdrops or token reward withdrawals via a vending machine-like platform can partner with SmartClaimz, which relies on FreeLoaderz load balancer proxies. Any application or project wanting to allow for a more decentralized way to carry out transactions or to deploy tokens is able to use FreeLoaderz load balancer proxy as well. FreeLoaderz SPOs will also be able to participate in the FreeLoaderz PSPO, which will reward delegators for staking to FreeLoaderz SPOs by giving out $FLZ governance tokens. So there are many additional incentives for SPOs to onboard with FreeLoaderz!
We expect this is just the beginning of many exciting things to come on the Cardano blockchain, and FreeLoaderz wants to contribute by providing the highest quality products and services to improve the experience for everyone in the Cardano Community, ranging from the everyday user to large projects. This has been a community effort, with SPOs and community members volunteering their free time to these projects. It all began as a grassroots movement to bring value to the community, and we will continue to do so as the blockchain grows and evolves. As long as there is a need, FreeLoaderz will continue to build open-source platforms and welcome anyone to participate in the movement to make Cardano the best blockchain it can be for the wonderful community that uses it.
